We saw him at the Met in his later years. He didn't quite make the 9 high C's. I knew right away but the audience believed he did and gave him a standing ovation. The next day the headlines confirmed he came very close but no cigar. He was amazing regardless.

Fun fact from what I've heard: Callas had her cords checked out and found out there wasn't anything wrong with them. It was underlying health and emotional/psychological problems that contributed to her decline.

I watched Netrebko as Aida live in November 2022 and she didn't sound this dreadful I assure you. Of course she was far from an outstanding Aida, but she went through the role without these wobbles and hit all the right notes. Of course her acting was mediocre and when she was on stage but had no lines to sing, she was expressionless. It was impossible to feel any sadness in O terra addio with her performance or her husband's Radamés, who was noticeably worse than her. Artur Ručinski as her father Amonasro was vocally perfect though, but he looked like his little brother rather than his father, it was a WTF moment when he appeared.

Una pena e per quanto mi riguarda, ascoltare una voce che fu spettacolare in queste condizioni, un grande dolore. Ogni volta che Di Stefano tenta l'appoggio va in crisi profonda ed aveva solo 45 anni. Questi sono i risultati che si ottengono a cantare senza una solida tecnica vocale.

It was so brilliant the audience demanded to hear it again! Di Stephano, one of the truly great singers with an exceptional instrument.

I'd love to hear Franco Corelli belt out this.

Ich finde, es ist ziemlich unfair, diese beiden Aufnahmen gegeneinander auszuspielen. Das war halt einer von Tebaldis schlechtesten Abenden. Die beiden Sängerinnen haben auch einen komplett anderen Zugang zu der Rolle. Callas beherrschte die Regeln des Belcanto perfekt, ihre Phrasierung und die Kolorierung jeder Phrase ist einfach wunderbar. Tebaldis Violetta war generell 'veristischer'. Gut, die Cabaletta ist nach unten transponiert, ihre Koloraturtechnik ist mangelhaft, aber die Koloraturen, die sie singt, sind eigentlich sehr flüssig. Aber wie sie den 2. und dritten Akt gesungen hat, (auch auf der Studioaufnahme), war klanglich unglaublich üppig, sehr empfindsam und auf ihre Art und Weise auch sehr berührend. Sie hätte die Rolle nicht so oft (auch an der Met) gesungen, wenn sie nicht Erfolg damit gehabt hätte. Aber klar, in diesem direkten Vergleich hat sie gegen Callas keine Chance. Bei `Pace, pace, mio dio`, 'O terra, addio' oder 'Salce, salce' sähe die Sache schon ganz anders aus....
